Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy.
One common pelvic health condition is incontinence- the involuntary loss of bowel or bladder control. Other pelvic health conditions that can be treated with physiotherapy include:
The pelvic floor is a group of often ignored, but important muscles in the pelvis. These muscles are layered on the inside of our pelvis and act like a sling to support our organs against gravity. It also acts as a sphincter to control our sexual, bowel, and bladder function. The pelvic floor performs other critical functions for the body. It adds stability to our pelvis and hip joints, and helps to take the pressure off the lumbar spine.
Every person has a pelvic floor, so pelvic floor physiotherapy can help people of all genders and all ages.
One common pelvic health condition is incontinence – the involuntary loss of bowel or bladder control. Incontinence can happen during activities such as jumping, lifting, exercising, or making transitional movements. It can also occur while coughing, sneezing, or laughing. Incontinence can occur in people of all ages and any gender. It can be associated with either a loose or a tight pelvic floor.
Other pelvic health conditions that can be treated with physiotherapy include generalized pain in the low back, pelvic, testicular or tailbone regions, painful intercourse, erectile dysfunction, and organ prolapse.
Women who are pregnant can benefit from pelvic health physiotherapy to prepare their pelvic floor for pregnancy. Women are encouraged to follow up post partum for help with achieving optimal recovery after the birth.
The first appointment will often involve a lot of talking so that Jen can focus on your story, learn about your symptoms, but more importantly, your goals. You will have the opportunity to ask Jen any questions you have to help you understand your pelvic floor. The physical assessment will involve an examination of your low back and hips, and if you are comfortable and agreeable, it would also include an internal vaginal and/or rectal assessment of the tone and strength of your pelvic floor muscles. If you are not comfortable with having an internal assessment, you can still benefit from seeing Jen. You can talk to Jen about your concerns and together you can make a plan that suits your needs, goals, and comfort level.
Every person’s pelvic health story is different, so Jen will work closely with you to create a plan that is tailored specifically to you. Jen combines manual therapy and soft tissue release techniques with exercise and education to help reduce your pain, improve your function, and achieve your goals.
