According to ICBC, every year there are on average 50,000 car crashes resulting in injury in British Columbia. Getting injured in a collision can cause lasting injuries. It’s important to understand what these injuries are, and what treatments are available to help speed your recovery.
And remember: be sure to seek medical attention immediately whenever you are in a traffic collision.
What should you do after your accident?
As a result of the trauma of the car accident, your body reflexively produces hormones called endorphins, which act as painkillers. Because of the stress and shock of the accident and the production of endorphins, you might not know right away that you have been injured.
So it’s important to seek medical attention as quickly as possible.
Be sure to seek medical attention
Seek medical attention as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hours of the accident. Also, make sure to bring a trusted friend or family member to your first appointments or treatment.
Why?
- There will be numerous forms to fill out and a ton of information for you to “digest”.
- A second set of ears can be very helpful in the treatment room.
- Don’t assume that your injuries or symptoms will clear up on their own.
- Do the safe thing and get checked out!
Take control of your recovery
Keep in mind you need to take control of your recovery. Keep a journal of your daily symptoms. Also be sure to include a detailed description of what happened just before the accident and what happened just after the accident.
Be prepared when you meet your doctor
Note any doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists, chiropractors, or other medical professionals who treat you.
Any time you meet a primary care physician, remember to:
- Keep a detailed account of the treatments or medications you received.
- Keep copies of all medical reports and bills.
- Never sign any documents that you don’t understand.
- Be sure on what you are signing, so you are not signing your right to privacy away.

Continue with your course of treatment
After a car accident, if your practitioner diagnoses an injury and begins treatment, continue the course of treatment until your injuries have healed and your symptoms have disappeared.
There are two reasons why this is important:
- Your healthcare practitioner is in the best position to determine how seriously you are injured, and to prescribe the best treatment for you.
- Your records of your visits are the best way to document and verify the nature and extent of your injuries, as well as the course and duration of your treatment – you may need to this information in the future.
